Background

Choosing Wisely Canada (CWC) launched in 2014 with an ambitious goal to foster conversations between clinicians and patients about the overuse of unnecessary tests and treatments in health care.

Since 2018, the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) has been a campaign partner with CWC, supporting initiatives to improve the utilization of health care resources.

CSMLS Endorsement of Partner’s Recommendations

CSMLS is proud participant in in the CWC climate change imitative, united in the fight against the effects of climate change. We recognize that climate change poses a significant threat to public health, and we are committed to taking proactive steps to mitigate its impact. Many of our partner organizations have developed valuable recommendations that outline strategies for healthcare systems to reduce their environmental footprint and promote sustainability. We feel it is of vital interest to promote those recommendations, especially those recommendations that would be applicable to the medical laboratory profession.

We fully endorse the following recommendations and encourage all our members to familiarize themselves with them, as they provide important guidance on how we can collectively contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future.1

  • Don’t dispose of non-contaminated wrapping materials in contaminated waste bins (biohazard).
  • Don’t use disposable gloves when standard hand hygiene disinfection practices are safe and sufficient.
  • Don’t pour any hazardous chemicals or reagents down sinks, toilets, or drains or dispose of in the trash. 2
  • Don’t use single-use/disposable items when a reusable option is available and less resource intensive.
  • Don’t repetitively order daily blood tests on hospitalized patients if it will not change management.
